The Mustangs took a brutal hit to graduation from last year's Group 5 Championship team that finished #1 in the Shore and #2 in the State. While they will have a ton of new faces in the lineup, those new faces come from Memorial's DEEP talent pool created by one of the Shore's best feeder programs.
In the lower half of the lineup, three starters return, all District champs, highlighted by junior Gianni Ghione. Ghione is a 2-time State qualifier and placed 2nd in NJ last season at 113. He also has a Region title (2014) to his credit, and was the runner-up last year. Luke Vescovi, the D23 champ at 132 last season, is only one of a handful of seniors in the room, and will be looked to provide veteran leadership. Memorial had a very talented freshmen class come in last year, but with the loaded depth chart they had, it was tough for them to crack the lineup. One of those that did, was Matt Wardlaw who caught fire at the end of the year and won the D23 title at 106 pounds. The rest of that class will be looking to step up and make an immediate impact in 2016.
With just two starters returning, there will be a big makeover in the upper half of the lineup as well. The big name here of course is junior heavy Nick Rivera. Rivera was the runner-up at heavyweight in Atlantic City last season, and will be one of the favorites for the top spot in 2016. He's joined in the upper half by another returning D23 champ, Anthony Mitchell. The two will be looked at to provide stability for the rest of the group that will feature a ton of underclassmen.
With the departures of Donovan, the Ruggieros, the Bocalmans, Owen, Mitler, and Stowers, among others, the Stangs have a ton of talent that needs to be replaced. As mentioned earlier, they do have one of the deepest talent pools around to pull from, but there will be plenty of work to do. The good news here is, while there are the usual stiff A-South tests early on, the lineup will have plenty of time to come together before they face the two of the other projected Division heavy hitters this season, Southern and Jackson Memorial, who they won't face until late January. By that time, the Stangs could be rolling. It should also be noted that after one year, Memorial has moved from SJG5 back into CJG4 with the likes of A-South foes Jackson Memorial and Brick Twp, as well as Long Branch.
