3/4: Molinaro Wins 3rd State Title!

Senior Frank Molinaro joined an exclusive club by becoming a 3-Time NJSIAA State Champion.  Molinaro becomes just the 5th Shore Conference wrestler ever to achieve the trifecta and the 20th overall.  Teammates Luke Lanno (145) and Glen Carson (215) also advanced to the Finals, but came up just short in their bids for state championships. Congratulations to all 3 wrestlers on an outstanding season and best of luck to Frank and Luke as they continue their wrestling careers at the next level.

Southern rolls past TR East for titleBY DAVID P. BIGGY

STAFFORD  It almost seemed as if Thursday night was about going out in style for the Southern wrestling team's seniors.

First, Frank Molinaro pinned in his last match on Southern's gym floor. Then it was Luke Lanno's and Keith Dillard's turn. Ed Broderick then followed Dillard with a pin as well, before Josh Cipolla and Mike Thomas both turned in a pair of decisions.

And by the way, the Rams also won their third straight NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV championship, 51-12, over Shore Conference Class A South rival Toms River East.

"It's nice because it was my last home match," Lanno said of his 33-second pin of Anthony Sherman and the rout. "I was kind of taking everything in today. It's a little sad that we won't be wrestling on this floor anymore."

The victory over East sends the Rams into the NJSIAA Group IV semifinals Sunday at Toms River North's Ritacco Center against Phillipsburg. The Group IV semis begin at 12:30 p.m., with the group title match set for 6 p.m.

After Frank Miele lost a 5-0 decision to East's Matt Frank at 135 pounds, Mike Chiapetta came up big for Southern by scoring a takedown with 9.4 seconds left in overtime to edge P.J. Aliseo, 5-3.

From there, it was all Southern, as Molinaro pinned Vincent Prozzo in 1:41 during the 145-pound bout, followed by Lanno's pin of Sherman at 152, Dillard's 3:03 pin of Bryan Sternlieb, and Ed Broderick's 53-second pin of Frank Rubino at 171 to make the score 27-3.

Nick Maugeri gave up a takedown to East's Steve Striffolino with 29 seconds to go in their 130-pound match and suffered a 3-1 loss.

As the Rams turn their focus toward Sunday, that age-old question comes to the forefront: Should they get another chance at Jackson, can Southern do enough to finally beat the Jaguars after five straight losses.

"We just have to win two of those four toss-up matches," Molinaro said. "Whether it's Thomas and Broderick, or Maugeri and Broderick, or whatever. I know we're going to be ready to wrestle."

12/17: Southern Finishes 4th at The Beast!

Despite leaving two weight classes open, the Rams still managed to finish 4th Place overall at "The Toughest Tournament in the Nation".  The Rams helped their cause by sending 9 of their 12 wrestlers into the 3rd Round of the Championship brackets, and performed solidly in the Wrestleback brackets to stay inside the Top 5 throughout the tournament.

It was Luke Lanno who stole the show by wrestling his way as the 9th seed all the way to a Beast Championship at 152.  Frank Molinaro also joined Lanno in the finals, but was defeated by highly touted Alex Meade of Caeser Rodney.

Sophomore Glen Carson capped an impressive run by finishing 7th in the 215 pound weight class.

The week ahead:  The Rams will have A-South matches against Brick Township (home 12/20) and at TR South (Saturday morning).  Then on Saturday night, it's the showdown against #3 in NJ Camden Catholic at home!
